SFCC merchants wanting to adopt Coveo search had no standardised path to do so. Each integration had to be built from scratch, requiring specialist knowledge of both platforms, significant development time, and custom work that varied from merchant to merchant. This was a barrier to adoption and a poor experience for Coveo’s SFCC customer base. Coveo needed a cartridge that solved the following:

Plug-and-play installation: The cartridge had to be installable by any SFCC merchant without requiring bespoke development work for each deployment.

Full search replacement: Once installed, the cartridge needed to completely replace SFCC’s native search with Coveo-powered results, covering search pages, category pages, and query handling.

SFRA compatibility: The cartridge had to work within SFCC’s Storefront Reference Architecture framework, following platform conventions so it could be maintained and extended by any SFCC development team.

SiteGenesis compatibility: The cartridge also needed to support SiteGenesis storefronts, allowing merchants operating on legacy SFCC implementations to adopt Coveo search without requiring a complete storefront migration.

Reusability across merchants: The solution had to be built generically enough to work across different merchant catalog structures and storefront configurations without custom modification for each client.
